Day 3
Another cold morning. Up at 6:00, as has been the routine. Packed up my tent and camping gear, then ran across the river to Rockwood proper to fill up the water bottles at the Husky Haven office property. Took advantage of the ‘real' toilet while there.
Cramed down a power bar then hit the road, with the plan being to stop in Meyersdale for a proper breakfast.
First, however, was the Salisbury Viaduct.
As an individual afraid of heights, this was an event. It was a “keep peddling, don't look down, don't stop" event.
Shortly after crossing and grabbing pictures was Meyersdale.
Rolling down Main Street from the trailhead, I asked a local where to stop. They immediately recommended G.I. Dayroom, mentioning it's a diner just a few blocks down
I grabbed an omelet and a Smiley Face Pancake. A one-stack was more than enough!
Afterwards was some uphill riding then the Keystone Viaduct. Shorter and not as high up compared to the Salisbury, but a great picture from the northern side.
After the Keystone Viaduct was a handful of milestone crossings and photo worthy moments. Here's the rundown.
The ‘high point’ of the trip: the Eastern Continental Divide. Thank you to the strangers who helped me with this first picture.
Next was the Big Savage Tunnel. 3,291 feet long, it was difficult to see the end from the opening.
Just after getting out of the tunnel was a fantastic view into the valley.
Rolling downhill, it was about two miles until I crossed into Maryland.
Around 22 miles later, thankfully downhill, I reached Cumberland, Maryland.
This was mile marker zero for the Great Allegheny Passage. 148 miles from my start at Point State Park.
The most fun day so far.
Tomorrow I start on the second half of my trip: the C&O Towpath Canal.
184 miles to go.
